What Posts Are Available?
Peon accounts for 124 of 153 seats. Cleaner adds 17. Sweeper, Chowkidar and Mali together are only 12 seats. If you want a realistic shot at Secretariat posting, treat Peon as the main list and apply for other designations only if you specifically want that duty.
Meghalaya does not use the central UR/OBC/SC/ST/EWS grid here. Categories are UR, Khasi-Jaintia (KJ), Garo and Other STs/SCs. Backlog seats are first-instance unfilled posts from Advertisement No. SAN.66/2019/6 dated 09 February 2022.
Peon – 124 posts (Class VI Passed | Level-1)
| Stream | UR | KJ | Garo | OSTs/SCs | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unfilled (2022 leftover) | – | 4 | 1 | 1 | 6 |
| Fresh | 17 | 48 | 47 | 6 | 118 |
| Total | 17 | 52 | 48 | 7 | 124 |
Earmarks inside fresh Peon seats: UR – 1 PwBD (Partially Deaf); KJ – 2 PwBD (Partially Deaf) + 2 Sports Persons; Garo – 2 PwBD (locomotor, One Arm / One Leg Affected) + 2 Sports Persons; OSTs/SCs – 1 PwBD (locomotor, OA/OL).
Cleaner – 17 posts (Class VI Passed | Level-1)
| Stream | UR | KJ | Garo | OSTs/SCs | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unfilled | – | 1 | 3 | 1 | 5 |
| Fresh | 2 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 12 |
| Total | 2 | 6 | 7 | 2 | 17 |
Garo unfilled Cleaner includes 1 PwBD (Partially Deaf). Fresh KJ and Garo Cleaner each include 1 Sports Person seat.
Sweeper, Chowkidar and Mali – 12 fresh posts (Class VI Passed | Level-1)
| Post | UR | KJ | Garo | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sweeper | 1 | 3 | 2 | 6 |
| Chowkidar | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
| Mali | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
All five designations share the same qualification and pay level. Daily work differs: Peon handles files and dak, Cleaner and Sweeper keep Secretariat buildings usable, Chowkidar covers watch and ward, Mali looks after gardens and grounds.
Who Is Eligible? Education, Age and Category
All 153 seats require Class VI passed from a recognised institution. There is no higher-qualification bar in the advertisement. Graduates may apply, but they compete with Class VI candidates on the same 100-mark paper.
Reservation is as per the Government of Meghalaya Reservation Policy. Claim KJ, Garo or Other ST/SC only with a valid category certificate. PwBD and Sports Person claims need the matching certificate at document verification.
What Is the Age Limit?
Age is reckoned as on 01 January 2026.
| Category | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Unreserved | 18 years | 32 years |
| Scheduled Tribe / Scheduled Caste | 18 years | 37 years (32 + 5) |
| PwBD | 18 years | As per OM No. PER(AR)150/88/560 dated 18 January 2023 |
Accepted date-of-birth proof: Municipal Board certificate, Department of Health & Family Welfare certificate, School Certificate, or H.S.L.C. Admit Card. No other proof is accepted.
Examples:
✅ A 31-year-old UR candidate born on 01 January 1995 — eligible (within the 32-year limit as on 01 January 2026).

What Is the Grade IV Salary in Meghalaya?
The advertisement places every post on Level-1 of the Meghalaya pay matrix plus usual allowances. Under the Meghalaya Services (Revision of Pay) Rules, Level-1 entry basic is ₹17,400.
Indicative monthly pay for a recruit posted in Greater Shillong (no government quarter):
| Component | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pay | ₹17,400 | Level-1, Cell 1 (5th Meghalaya Pay Commission) |
| Dearness Allowance | ₹9,222 | 53% of basic w.e.f. 01 January 2026 (Finance OM F(PR)-53/2017/85) |
| House Rent Allowance | ₹2,610 | 15% of basic for Greater Shillong, subject to the state HRA cap |
| Gross (indicative) | ₹29,232 | Before statutory deductions |
| NPS (typical recruit) | ~₹2,662 | 10% of basic + DA, if NPS applies to the appointee |
| In-hand (indicative) | ₹25,500–₹27,000 | Shillong posting; actual slip depends on quarter allotment, winter/hill allowances and deductions |
This is an estimate from the state pay matrix and current DA/HRA orders, not a figure printed in SAN.66/2019/89. Verify the first pay slip against your appointment order. DA changes when Finance issues the next OM. Use the DA Calculator to refresh the allowance when rates change. New state government recruits generally contribute to NPS; use the NPS Pension Calculator for a long-term picture.
What Is the Application Fee?
A fee is charged for each post. Applying for Peon and Cleaner means two fees.
| Category | Fee per post | Payment modes |
|---|---|---|
| General | ₹100 | Debit/ATM card, credit card, net banking, UPI, or SBI e-Challan (cash at any SBI branch) |
| ST / SC | ₹50 | Same modes |
Bank commission on e-Challan is extra. You need not submit the physical e-Challan to the department. Fee paid for one post is not transferred to another post.
How to Apply?
Applications are received only online. Any other mode is rejected.
- Open the Meghalaya RPA portal (older megrecruitment.nic.in logins have been migrated; re-register on RPA, preferably with the same email).
- Complete one-time registration if you are a first-time user.
- Log in and select the Grade IV post you want under Secretariat Administration Department (Nazarat).
- Fill personal, educational and category details exactly as on certificates.
- Upload photo, signature and certificates. Resize files first with the Photo & Signature Resizer.
- Pay the fee for that post. For SBI e-Challan, print the challan and pay at a branch before the portal closes.
- Submit before 5:00 PM on 18 September 2026. Save the application printout and payment receipt.
- Repeat steps 3–7 if you are applying for more than one designation.
If one candidate qualifies for more than one Grade IV post in this advertisement, the Departmental Selection Committee decides the allotment.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating one application as valid for all five posts. Each designation needs its own form and fee.
- Using the retired megrecruitment.nic.in site and assuming the form has gone through.
- Selecting Jowai, Nongstoin or Nongpoh as a centre and later asking for a change. The centre cannot be changed. If numbers are low, the Committee may shift you to the nearest centre.
- Upload Aadhaar or a birth affidavit as age proof. Only the four proofs listed in the advertisement are accepted.
- Wait until 5:00 PM on 18 September 2026. The portal closes at 17:00 hrs; e-Challan cash payment also has to clear in time.

How Are Candidates Selected?
Selection is a multi-step process run by the Departmental Selection Committee.
- Online application and fee on RPA
- Written examination (mandatory; at the candidate’s own expense)
- Merit list against notified vacancies and the Meghalaya reservation roster
- Document verification of Class VI, age, category, PwBD and sports certificates
- Appointment as Grade IV in the Secretariat Administration Department (Nazarat)
No interview stage is mentioned in the current notification. Selection is based entirely on written-exam merit plus document verification, in line with Office Memorandum No. PER(AR)58/2024/36 dated 29 July 2025.
Exam Pattern
| Paper | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| General English | 50 | 1 hour (1 hour 30 minutes for PwBD) |
| General Awareness | 50 | Same sitting |
| Total | 100 |
Negative marking applies. The exact quantum will be printed in the question-paper guidelines. The official advertisement does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. Treat any detailed subject list circulating online as unofficial until the Committee issues one.
Exam centres: Shillong, Tura, Jowai, Nongstoin and Nongpoh. Choose the centre carefully. It cannot be changed later.
There is no physical efficiency test in this advertisement. Chowkidar and Mali still involve standing work, night duty or outdoor labour after joining.
Why Does the Meghalaya Civil Secretariat Matter?
The Meghalaya Civil Secretariat in Shillong is the administrative hub of the Government of Meghalaya. SAD (Nazarat) runs establishment work from Assistant Superintendent down to Peon, pays ministers and staff, moves dak, and keeps the Main and Additional Secretariat buildings functioning.
A Grade IV posting here is a regular state government job in the capital, not a district muster-roll or NHM contract. Files, ministers’ offices and every department’s paper trail pass through this campus.
Candidates search this employer because Secretariat Peon seats are rare compared with District Selection Committee Grade IV lists, because Level-1 pay plus DA is steadier than casual daily wage, and because Shillong posting is preferred over remote blocks. The honest downside is the volume of applicants. Class VI, as the bar opens the field to tens of thousands of local candidates for 153 seats, and daily work remains physical support duty, not desk promotion by default.

The SahisarkariJobs.in Analyst’s Take
Place this notice next to the other Meghalaya Grade IV windows opening on RPA in August 2026, especially the Meghalaya State Public Services Delivery Commission Peon, Cleaner and Chowkidar advertisements issued the same week, and the standing District Selection Committee Grade IV calendars. Secretariat seats are fewer than a statewide DSC pool, but the workplace is the civil secretariat in Shillong rather than a block office.

Best fit: Class VI to Class X candidates from Khasi-Jaintia and Garo categories who want a regular state Grade IV badge and can accept file-running, cleaning, watch or garden work in Shillong.
Skip this if you are treating it as a shortcut into LDA or MPSC. The paper is General English plus General Awareness at Grade IV standard. A graduate who wants a clerk’s chair should wait for Grade III / LDA notifications instead of expecting this list to convert into office work.
Practical tip: Pay the extra ₹50–₹100 and file Peon plus one more designation only if you genuinely want that second duty. If you clear more than one list, the Committee assigns the post. Centre choice is final, so pick Shillong or Tura unless you live next to Jowai, Nongstoin or Nongpoh.
Based on similar state Grade IV drives, expect several months from the last date to the written test, then DV and joining. Promotion after joining typically moves through seniority and departmental examinations, not an automatic jump to Grade III.
What Documents Are Required for Meghalaya Govt Jobs?
Keep scans ready for the portal and originals for DV.
- Date of birth: Municipal Board / Health & Family Welfare / School Certificate / H.S.L.C. Admit Card only
- Class VI pass certificate or mark sheet
- Category certificate for KJ / Garo / Other ST/SC, if claimed
- PwBD certificate, if claiming Partially Deaf or locomotor (OA/OL) seats
- Skilled Sportsperson certificate, if claiming the sports earmark
- Photo and signature in the portal’s size limits
- Application printout and fee receipt
Document alert: Aadhaar, PAN or a hospital discharge note will not replace the four accepted age proofs. A sports certificate without the authority named by state rules will not hold a Sports Person earmark.
What Happens After Selection?
- The Departmental Selection Committee publishes the written-exam merit list on the RPA portal and departmental notice boards.
- Shortlisted candidates attend document verification with original Class VI, age and category papers.
- Medical fitness, if required by Secretariat joining rules, is completed before the appointment order.
- An appointment order is issued for the allotted designation (Peon, Cleaner, Sweeper, Chowkidar or Mali) under SAD (Nazarat).
- You join duty at the Meghalaya Civil Secretariat in Shillong, receive a Level-1 pay bill, and complete whatever probation the service rules prescribe.
- Confirmation and later promotion depend on satisfactory service and departmental examinations. This is Grade IV work first. File movement, cleaning, watch or gardening will be the daily job, not an honorary title.
Service conditions such as bond, exact probation length and quarter entitlement are not spelt out in SAN.66/2019/89. Those follow Meghalaya Secretariat service rules after appointment.

FAQs – Meghalaya Secretariat Grade IV 2026
Q1: What is the last date to apply for Meghalaya Secretariat Peon 2026?
A: 18 September 2026, 5:00 PM. The portal will not accept forms after 17:00 hrs. No extension is notified as of 01 September 2026.
Q2: What is the age limit for Meghalaya Secretariat Peon?
A: 18 to 32 years as on 01 January 2026. ST/SC candidates get 5 extra years (upper age 37). PwBD relaxation follows OM PER(AR)150/88/560 dated 18 January 2023.
Q3: Is there an exam for Meghalaya Secretariat Grade IV, or is it interview-based?
A: Yes, there is a written exam. General English: 50 marks and General Awareness: 50 marks, in one hour, with negative marking. There is no interview.
Q4: What is the salary of a Secretariat Peon in Meghalaya?
A: Level-1 basic is ₹17,400. With 53% DA and Shillong HRA, gross is about ₹29,200, and in-hand is about ₹25,500–₹27,000 before extra allowances. The advertisement itself only names Level-1 plus usual allowances.
Q5: Can final-year students or result-awaited candidates apply for this recruitment?
A: No. You need a Class VI pass certificate or mark sheet. The advertisement does not allow a result-awaited Class VI candidate.
Q6: Is Meghalaya Secretariat Peon a permanent government job?
A: Yes. These are regular Grade IV posts on the state pay matrix, not contractual NHM or daily-wage seats. Pension scheme details follow Meghalaya service rules after joining.
Q7: Can candidates from other states apply for Meghalaya Secretariat recruitment?
A: Yes, if you are an Indian citizen. Most reserved seats are for Khasi-Jaintia, Garo and Other STs/SCs of Meghalaya. Other-state applicants should treat UR seats as the realistic list.
Q8: Where will I be posted if I get selected?
A: At the Meghalaya Civil Secretariat in Shillong under SAD (Nazarat). The advertisement does not offer a district preference form.
Q9: Is Meghalaya domicile compulsory for these Grade IV posts?
A: The advertisement asks for Indian citizenship, not a separate domicile clause. Reservation certificates for KJ, Garo and Other ST/SC are still required if you claim those seats.
Q10: Can I apply for Peon and Cleaner together?
A: Yes. Submit a separate online form and fee for each post. If you qualify for more than one, the Departmental Selection Committee allots one designation.
Q11: What are the disadvantages of a Secretariat Grade IV job?
A: Worth knowing before you apply: the work is physical support, the applicant pool is huge because Class VI is enough, and promotion to Grade III is not automatic. Shillong living costs also eat a Level-1 in-hand faster than a rural posting would.
Q12: What is the salary of Grade IV staff in Meghalaya state government?
A: Level-1 starts at ₹17,400 basic. With the current 53% DA, most Grade IV staff in Shillong take home the mid-₹20,000s after NPS. District headquarters HRA is 12.5%, so in-hand outside Shillong is slightly lower if no quarter is given.
Q13: Do Meghalaya government Grade IV exams include an interview?
A: No, for this Secretariat drive. The state dropped interviews for this advertisement under OM PER(AR)58/2024/36 dated 29 July 2025. Other departments may still use a different method, so read that advertisement.
Final Checklist – Is This the Right Job for You?
- You are 18–32 (or 18–37 if ST/SC) as on 01 January 2026.
- You hold a Class VI pass certificate and an accepted age proof.
- You accept regular Grade IV duty (files, cleaning, watch or garden work) at the Secretariat in Shillong.
- You can pay ₹100 or ₹50 per post and finish the RPA form by 18 September 2026, 5:00 PM.
