Frequently Asked Questions
Most government colleges and universities in India require a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible to appear in semester exams. This is mandated by the UGC for all centrally-funded universities. Some states allow 65–70% attendance with a medical certificate. A few private universities and deemed institutions require 85%. Always check your college's specific attendance policy in the prospectus or academic regulations.
Attendance percentage = (Total Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100. For example, if 120 classes were held and you attended 98, attendance = (98 ÷ 120) × 100 = 81.67%. Most colleges calculate this semester-wise (not cumulative), though some cumulative systems also exist. Medical leave, university events, and NCC/NSS activities may be counted as attended in some institutions.
Maximum classes you can miss = Total Classes − (0.75 × Total Classes) = 0.25 × Total Classes. For example, if there are 120 total classes, you can miss a maximum of 120 × 0.25 = 30 classes. However, this uses up your entire buffer with no margin. Practically, it is safer to target 80%+ to have a buffer for emergencies. If upcoming classes remain, the calculator tells you exactly how many more you can afford to skip.
Attendance records are not directly required for government job applications. However, if your attendance is below the required minimum, you may not be allowed to sit for university exams, which can delay your graduation and affect your ability to meet application deadlines. Some PSU companies do ask for attendance certificates during campus placements as a character reference.
