GPF (General Provident Fund) is a provident fund available exclusively to central government employees who joined service before January 1, 2004 and are covered under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The current GPF interest rate is 7.1% per annum, compounded annually. The minimum contribution is 6% of Basic Pay. The maximum contribution is 100% of Basic Pay. GPF is not available to employees who joined after January 1, 2004 — they are covered under NPS.
The GPF interest rate for 2026 is 7.1% per annum, as notified by the Ministry of Finance. This rate applies to all GPF accounts including CPF, SRPF and similar funds. The interest is credited annually at the end of the financial year (31st March). GPF interest is fully exempt from income tax under Section 10(11) of the Income Tax Act.
GPF can be fully withdrawn on superannuation (retirement), resignation, or death. Partial withdrawals (advances) are allowed for specific purposes: housing, education of children, medical treatment, marriage of children, and post-secondary education. Partial withdrawal rules: up to 12 months subscription or 3/4 of the balance (whichever is less) for housing after 10 years of service. The final GPF amount is paid as a lump sum at retirement and is fully tax-free.
