Frequently Asked Questions
CGPA is the weighted average of all your SGPAs, with each semester weighted by its total credits. Formula: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Credits for that semester) ÷ Total Credits across all semesters. If all semesters have equal credits, CGPA = Average of all SGPAs. Example: Sem 1: SGPA 7.5 (20 credits), Sem 2: SGPA 8.0 (22 credits), Sem 3: SGPA 7.8 (20 credits) → CGPA = (7.5×20 + 8.0×22 + 7.8×20) ÷ 62 = 481 ÷ 62 = 7.76.
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your grade point average for a single semester, calculated as the sum of (Grade Point × Credits) for each subject in that semester, divided by total credits that semester. Each course is assigned a grade point (usually 0-10) based on your marks according to your university's grading system. SGPA is shown on your individual semester marksheets, while CGPA is the overall average on your final degree certificate.
Individual SGPA values are not usually required for government job applications — only the final CGPA or overall percentage is needed. However, some PSU companies (like Infosys, TCS placements, or GATE-based PSU recruitments) may ask for SGPA in specific semesters during campus placements. For most SSC, IBPS, Railways, or State PSC applications, only the final CGPA (or its percentage equivalent) needs to be mentioned.
