Frequently Asked Questions
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in India is calculated using the credit-weighted average of grade points across all subjects in all semesters. The formula is: CGPA = Sum of (Grade Point × Credits for each subject) ÷ Total Credits. For example, if you have 5 subjects with grade points 8, 7, 9, 6, 8 and credits 4, 3, 4, 3, 4 respectively, CGPA = (8×4 + 7×3 + 9×4 + 6×3 + 8×4) ÷ (4+3+4+3+4) = 144 ÷ 18 = 8.0 CGPA.
For most government jobs in 2026, a minimum CGPA of 6.0–6.5 (equivalent to 60–65%) is required. PSU jobs through GATE (BHEL, NTPC, ONGC) require 6.5 CGPA (60%). Bank PO and SO posts typically need 60% (6.32 CGPA under CBSE formula). UPSC Civil Services has no minimum CGPA requirement. For technical roles at ISRO, DRDO, and IES, 7.0+ CGPA (70%) is preferred. First class with distinction (7.5+ CGPA) opens up the most opportunities.
CGPA is a grade point average on a fixed scale (usually 10 in India), while percentage is a direct score out of 100. CGPA uses a credit-weighted system that averages performance across all subjects, while percentage adds raw marks and divides by total marks. CGPA is more standardised across universities since it accounts for varying difficulty levels through grade bands. For government job applications, convert CGPA to percentage using your university's official formula (CBSE: ×9.5, most others: ×10).
