A second national cycle in the same year, India Post GDS Recruitment 2026 (Online Engagement Schedule-II, July), again opens Gramin Dak Sevak seats without a written test. The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, has invited online applications vide Notification No. 17-12/2026-GDS dated 20 August 2026.
The drive covers three rural postal roles: Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak—tentative vacancies run into the 25,000+ range across circles and divisions. Exact office-wise numbers are on the GDS portal, not in a single printed national total in the 38-page PDF.
One-Time Registration opens on 31 August 2026. Applications and fee payment run from 02 September 2026 to 21 September 2026 (5:00 PM). Class 10 pass candidates with Mathematics, English and the prescribed local language can apply at indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement.

What Posts Are Available? – India Post Vacancy & Eligibility 2026
India Post is filling three Gramin Dak Sevak designations, not a single generic clerk post. BPM runs a Branch Office, often single-handed, and must house the office. ABPM supports counter work, mail and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) transactions. Dak Sevak handles delivery, sorting and office support at HO/SO and mail units.
✅ Confirmed: post names, TRCA slabs, local-language rule, residence conditions.
❓ Not specified in the descriptive PDF: a frozen national total and a printed circle-wise table. Those figures appear as Annexure-I on the live portal and can change.
| Post Name | Vacancies | Qualification | TRCA Slab |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branch Postmaster (BPM) | Division-wise on portal | Class 10 SSE with pass in Mathematics and English + local language up to Class 10 | ₹12,000–₹29,380 |
| Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) | Division-wise on portal | Same as above | ₹10,000–₹24,470 |
| Dak Sevak | Division-wise on portal | Same as above | ₹10,000–₹24,470 |
How to read this: Open the portal, pick your circle, then the division where you can actually live. The language studied in Class 10 controls which circles the form will show. You may rank multiple posts inside one Division; the highest-preference post you merit is offered first.
Reservation: SC, ST and OBC as per the State’s percentage for that Division; EWS 10%; PwBD horizontal reservation at 1% each for LV, D/HH, OA/OL/leprosy cured/dwarfism/acid-attack/BL/spinal infirmity, specific learning/intellectual disability, and multiple disabilities (as listed in the notification). Community-wise consolidation is shown in the Division annexure on the portal.
Eligibility – Education, Age & Language
Education (as on notification date): Secondary School Examination (Class 10) pass certificate with passing marks in Mathematics and English, from a Board recognised by the Government of India, a State Government or a Union Territory. Equivalent certificates from any other board are not accepted.
Local language: The applicant must have studied the prescribed language at least up to Class 10. Circle examples from Annexure-III include Telugu (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana), Hindi (Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Bihar circle posts as notified), Tamil (Tamil Nadu), Marathi/Konkani (Maharashtra/Goa as applicable), Bengali (West Bengal, Tripura as applicable), Odia, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Assamese and Mizo. Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim and Nagaland have special certificate-based language routes.
Other conditions (undertakings at engagement): computer/smartphone literacy, knowledge of cycling, and adequate means of livelihood besides GDS allowances. Past service of any kind is not counted for merit.
What Is the Age Limit for GDS Engagement?
Age is reckoned as on 21 September 2026 (last date of application submission).
| Category | Min Age | Max Age | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|---|
| UR | 18 | 40 | Nil |
| EWS | 18 | 40 | No extra years |
| OBC | 18 | 43 | +3 years |
| SC / ST | 18 | 45 | +5 years |
| PwBD (UR) | 18 | 50 | +10 years |
| PwBD + OBC | 18 | 53 | +13 years |
| PwBD + SC/ST | 18 | 55 | +15 years |
Examples:
✅ A 39-year-old UR candidate born on 22 September 1986 — eligible (within the 40-year limit as on 21 September 2026).
❌ A 41-year-old UR candidate born on 21 September 1985 — not eligible (exceeds maximum age by 1 year).
Use our Age Eligibility Calculator to check instantly.
What Is the GDS Remuneration in Rural India?
GDS are paid Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), not 7th CPC basic pay. Annual increase is 3% subject to GDS Rules. Dearness Allowance is paid on TRCA as declared by the Government of India. Social security includes GDS Gratuity and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (described as akin to the National Pension System for regular staff).
| Designation | Basic TRCA slab | Indicative monthly draw (TRCA + DA) |
|---|---|---|
| BPM | ₹12,000–₹29,380 | About ₹18,500–₹19,500 at entry if DA is near the current central rate (~55–58% of TRCA) |
| ABPM / Dak Sevak | ₹10,000–₹24,470 | About ₹15,500–₹16,500 at entry on the same DA assumption |
These in-hand figures are indicative only (TRCA + estimated DA). They are not an official payslip. Actual DA percentage and any other notified allowance must be read from GDS Rules and the engagement order. GDS emoluments are not at par with regular Central Government employees.
Hours are 4–5 hours a day. Engagement cannot continue beyond 65 years of age. Because TRCA is a part-day rural allowance, many selected candidates treat it as a stable second income, not a full metro salary.
What Is the Application Fee?
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| Male UR / OBC / EWS | ₹100 |
| Female applicants | Exempt |
| SC / ST | Exempt |
| PwBD | Exempt |
| Transwomen | Exempt |
Pay online by credit card, debit card, net banking or UPI before 5:00 PM on 21 September 2026. The fee is for all posts chosen in one Division. The fee, once paid, is not refunded, including if you later edit the form into an exempt category. Incomplete payment after closing time rejects the application.
How to Apply?
Applications are accepted only on the GDS Online Engagement portal. Do not use the India Post homepage as the apply link.
- Open the India Post GDS Online Engagement portal from 31 August 2026 and complete One-Time Registration with your own mobile and email (both verified by OTP).
- Note the Registration Number sent by SMS. One mobile and one email can serve only one candidate.
- From 02 September 2026, log in and open the active Schedule-II notification.
- Fill personal details exactly as on the Class 10 certificate (name, parents’ names, date of birth).
- Enter Board, year of passing and Class 10 marks. If the marksheet shows marks, enter marks — not grades. Boards that print both percentage and grade points (example given: Delhi Board of School Education) must use the printed percentage.
- Select Division and rank BPM / ABPM / Dak Sevak preferences. Only circles matching your Class 10 language will appear.
- Upload photo and signature, then preview. Use the Photo & Signature Resizer so files meet portal limits: photo JPG/JPEG 30–100 KB (about 320 × 400 px); signature JPG/JPEG 20–100 KB (about 300 × 120 px).
- Pay ₹100 if payable, submit, and save the acknowledgement. Correction, if needed, is only on 23–24 September 2026.
Marks conversion used later by the system: grade point × 9.5. Where CGPA is printed, CGPA × 9.5; if both subject grades and CGPA exist, the higher converted figure is taken. Tamil Nadu SBSE 2020–21 “Pass” certificates are assigned a uniform 66.67%. Confirm your board’s rule in the PDF before you type anything. Our CGPA to Percentage Calculator gives an indicative estimate. Use the conversion method specified in the notification. This calculator provides an indicative estimate — the official formula in the notification prevails.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Registering but not submitting the form. OTR closes on 19 September 2026; the application plus fee must still go in by 21 September 2026, 5:00 PM.
- Entering grades when the marksheet already shows marks. That can cancel the form. DBSE-type sheets need the printed percentage, not grade points.
- Choosing a Division where you cannot live. BPM must stay in the post village and provide Branch Office accommodation before engagement. ABPM and Dak Sevak must live inside the delivery jurisdiction.
- Blurred photo or miniature signature. The notification says such applications will be rejected.
- Second registration with a tweaked name or another family mobile. Duplicate registrations remove all linked candidatures.

How Are Gramin Dak Sevaks Selected?
No written examination is held. No interview stage is mentioned in the current notification. Selection is based entirely on CBT-free 10th-mark merit plus document verification.
- System merit list from Class 10 SSE marks, taken to four decimal places in percentage.
- Tie-break (only as notified): older date of birth first, then a fixed category-and-gender order starting with ST trans-woman, ST female, SC trans-woman, SC female, and so on. The Department may add further tie-breaking rules if needed.
- Intimation by SMS and email to the registered mobile and email inbox. Also watch the portal; the Department is not responsible if SMS/email fails.
- Physical verification of originals at the Divisional/Unit office, generally within 15 days of shortlisting.
- Offer of provisional engagement, then pre-engagement steps (including 3 days of basic training; BPM must arrange office accommodation).
- Antecedent/police verification and final engagement. Class 10 records may be checked through DigiLocker / API Setu. Consent is mandatory.
Preference logic: if you rank several posts in one Division and merit more than one, the highest-preference post is offered.
Why Does India Post Matter?
India Post is the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications. It runs the country’s largest last-mile postal and financial network, including Branch Offices in villages that regular Sub Post Offices do not cover. GDS staff keep those offices open: stamps, mail, IPPB deposits and payments, and Common Service Centre work.
Candidates search this cycle because Class 10 is enough, there is no exam fee wall for women and reserved groups, and the job is in or near home if the Division is chosen well. The India Post brand also signals a government-linked rural role rather than a private courier shift.
The honest limit is status. A GDS is a holder of a civil post outside the regular civil services. Pay, leave, and pension are not the same as those of a Postman, PA or MTS under the 7th Pay Commission. That gap is why many applicants treat GDS as a foothold while they prepare for regular postal or SSC exams.
The SahisarkariJobs.in Analyst’s Take
Schedule-II sits next to the January 2026 GDS cycle, not next to IBPS or SSC CGL. The tab most candidates actually have open is last season’s GDS list or the circle’s Postman/Mail Guard notification. Against Schedule-I, the rules are familiar: same TRCA slabs, same 10th-mark engine, same “no exam” pitch. Against regular Postman, GDS is easier to enter and weaker on pay, hours-to-status ratio, and promotion certainty.
Best fit: Class 10 candidates who already live in the target village, studied that circle’s language, can cycle a beat, and want a government-linked rural allowance without sitting a national CBT. BPM suits someone who can spare a room that meets Branch Office standards and will sit at the counter for 4–5 hours.
Skip this if you need a regular Group C post with 7th CPC Level pay, full-day office hours and NPS as a regular government employee. Also walk away if you cannot live in the post village, cannot show another livelihood source, or your Class 10 percentage is modest in a Division where previous GDS lists ran close to 90–100% in high-demand states.
Practical tip: Before OTR, open Annexure-I on the portal for your home Division, confirm the local language in Annexure-III, and decide BPM versus ABPM only after you know whether you can offer office space. Enter every 10th-mark field from the printed marksheet, not from memory.
What Documents Are Required?
Nothing except a photo and signature is uploaded with the form. Carry originals plus two self-attested photocopy sets at physical verification:
- Class 10 marksheet and certificate (Board, year, marks matching the form)
- Identity proof
- Date of birth proof (usually the same Class 10 certificate)
- Caste certificate in the prescribed format, if claiming SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer for OBC)
- EWS income and asset certificate, if claiming EWS
- PwBD certificate in the notified format, if applicable
- Transgender certificate, if applicable
- Medical certificate from a Government hospital/dispensary (compulsory at engagement stage)
- Local/tribal language certificate for Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim or Nagaland, where the special route applies
- Undertakings as per Annexures IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X (dismissal/criminal, computer literacy, cycling, livelihood, declarations, DigiLocker consent)
Document alert: Name, father’s name, mother’s name and date of birth must match the Class 10 record character for character. A mismatch can cancel the candidature even after a high merit score.

Service Conditions
GDS work is governed by the Gramin Dak Sevaks (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, not rules framed under Article 309. They are not regular Department or Central Government employees. Duty is mostly rural, 4–5 hours a day, with a hard stop at 65 years.
BPM must reside in the post village and provide Branch Office accommodation at own cost before engagement. ABPM and Dak Sevak must live within the delivery jurisdiction of the attached office. Combined duties can be ordered when the other GDS is unavailable. A separate livelihood source is a formal condition, not optional colour.
What Happens After Selection?
- The portal publishes the Division-wise shortlist. You also get an SMS/email if the registered details work.
- Report to the Divisional/Unit Head with originals and two photocopy sets within the time given (the notification works to a 15-day verification window).
- Documents and medical certificate are checked. Class 10 data may be verified on DigiLocker/API Setu.
- A provisional engagement offer is issued. BPM submits the accommodation declaration and actually arranges the Branch Office space.
- Complete three days of basic training and other pre-engagement formalities, generally targeted within 30 days of the offer.
- Antecedent verification is completed. Regular GDS engagement then starts on TRCA plus DA, with GDS Gratuity and Service Discharge Benefit Scheme coverage as per GDS Rules.
From form to joining, similar GDS cycles often take a few months inside the 31 December 2026 closure cap. There is no automatic promotion to Postman; that remains a separate recruitment or departmental path.
Contact & Helpline
Division-wise helpdesk numbers are published on the GDS Online Engagement portal. The Department states it does not phone applicants. Official mail, if any, uses addresses ending with @indiapost.gov.in or @indiapostgdsonline.gov.in.
All result and offer communication is designed to go to the registered mobile and email. For grievances after shortlisting, write to the Engaging Authority (Divisional/Unit Head) of the Division you selected — not a generic India Post HQ board line.

FAQs – India Post GDS Recruitment 2026
Q1: What is the last date to apply for India Post GDS 2026?
A: 21 September 2026, 5:00 PM, for the online form and fee. One-Time Registration itself closes earlier, on 19 September 2026 at 5:00 PM. No extension is mentioned in the current notification.
Q2: What is the age limit for India Post GDS?
A: 18 to 40 years as of 21 September 2026. OBC gets 3 extra years, SC/ST gets 5, PwBD gets 10. EWS has no extra age relaxation. Combined PwBD + OBC is 13 years and PwBD + SC/ST is 15 years.
Q3: Is there an exam for India Post GDS, or is it interview-based?
A: No exam and no interview. Shortlisting is a system merit list based on Class 10 marks, then document verification, training and antecedent checks. Ties go first to the older candidate, then to the notified category-gender order.
Q4: What is the salary of India Post GDS?
A: BPM starts on TRCA at ₹12,000 and ABPM/Dak Sevak at ₹10,000, plus DA on TRCA. Indicative entry draw is roughly ₹18,500–₹19,500 for BPM and ₹15,500–₹16,500 for ABPM if DA tracks current central rates. This is allowance-based engagement pay, not Level pay.
Q5: Can final-year students or result-awaited candidates apply for India Post 2026?
A: No. You need a completed Class 10 SSE pass certificate with passing marks in Mathematics and English as on the notification date. Equivalent or awaited qualifications are not accepted.
Q6: Is India Post GDS a permanent government job?
A: No. GDS are not regular Central Government employees. They hold civil posts outside the regular civil services under GDS Rules, 2020. TRCA, DA, GDS Gratuity and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme apply; 7th CPC Level pay and regular NPS do not.
Q7: Can candidates from other states apply for India Post recruitment?
A: Yes, as Indian applicants, but only in Divisions whose local-language condition you meet from Class 10. The form will not list circles whose language you did not study. Residence after selection must be in the post village or delivery area.
Q8: Where will I be posted if I get selected for India Post GDS?
A: In the Division and office you applied for, almost always a rural Branch Office or an attached HO/SO/mail unit. BPM stays in that village. You do not get an all-India transfer basket like SSC Group C.
Q9: How is Class 10 percentage calculated for this recruitment?
A: Marks on the sheet are used as printed. Grades convert to grade point × 9.5. CGPA converts as CGPA × 9.5; the higher figure wins if both exist. Tamil Nadu SBSE 2020–21 Pass certificates get 66.67%. Use the notification formula, not a school app.
Q10: Do I need to know cycling and computers for GDS?
A: Yes, as declared conditions. You give written undertakings for computer/smartphone use and cycling at engagement. There is no separate skill-test mark in this notification, but false declarations can cancel the offer later.
Q11: What are the disadvantages of a Gramin Dak Sevak job?
A: Worth knowing before you apply: hours are only 4–5 a day, pay is TRCA, not 7th CPC, you must keep another livelihood, and BPM pays for office space. It is stable village work, not a regular Postman cadre post.
Q12: Is a rural postal job worth it after Class 10?
A: Yes, if you want local government-linked work without a CBT. No if you can wait for Postman, MTS or State police, which pay more as regular posts. GDS is the easier door; regular postal exams remain the upgrade path.
Q13: How much do village postal workers earn in India?
A: New GDS usually take home the TRCA slab plus DA — often the mid-teens to around ₹20,000 at entry, depending on designation and the current DA rate. Regular Postman pay on 7th CPC is higher. Always read the engagement order, not social-media figures.
Final Checklist – Is This the Right Job for You?
- You meet the age and Class 10 criteria as on 21 September 2026.
- You accept GDS engagement, not regular Central Government service.
- You studied the local language of the circle up to Class 10.
- You can live in the post village/delivery jurisdiction and, for BPM, arrange office space.
- You can produce Class 10 marks, caste/EWS/PwBD papers and a Government medical certificate at verification.
- You understand the hardest stage is the document-and-residence reality after a high 10th percentage, not an exam.
