Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wrong GATE paper. CS seats need paper CS, EC seats need EC, DA seats need DA. A high CE or EE score will not move your name.
- Stopping after fee payment. Step 4 (confirmation page) is mandatory. Without it, NIC treats the application as incomplete.
- State OBC or old EWS paper. OBC must be central-list NCL in the GoI appointment format. EWS must be based on FY 2025-26 income and valid for 2026-27.
- Equivalent-degree argument. The notification says no equivalent claim will be entertained. If your branch title is not in the list, do not assume it will pass DV.

How Are Candidates Selected?
Selection is a two-stage pipeline, not a single event.
- GATE merit shortlist — NIC prepares a category-wise merit list in each discipline from the best GATE 2024 / 2025 / 2026 score you submit. All three years carry equal weight.
- Document verification — Shortlisted candidates download an authorisation letter from recruitment.nic.in and report with originals.
- Provisional appointment — Only after DV is cleared.
No interview stage is mentioned in the current notification. Selection is based entirely on GATE merit + document verification. There is also no NIC-conducted CBT.

Q13: What are the disadvantages of an NIC STA-A posting?
A: The trade-off is pay grade versus mobility. You join at Level-6, not Scientist-B Level-10, and you can be sent to a district centre or outside India. DV is unpaid and usually in Delhi. If you want metro-only work or Scientist rank on day one, this is the wrong form.

- You meet age and education rules as on 30 September 2026.
- You hold a valid GATE 2024/2025/2026 score in CS, EC or DA for the discipline you want.
- You accept Regular Government Service with all-India (and outside-India) posting.
- You can produce central-format caste/EWS/PwBD papers and the degree for DV.
- You understand the hardest stage is document verification, not an interview.
- You have budgeted ₹800 per discipline unless you are fee-exempt.
