What Is the Junior Engineer Salary in Central Government?

All notified posts sit in Pay Level-6: ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 under the 7th Central Pay Commission, plus DA, HRA and Transport Allowance of the allotted department.

Component (illustrative, 2026 rates)X-class city (30% HRA)Y-class city (20% HRA)Z-class city (10% HRA)
Basic pay₹35,400₹35,400₹35,400

Indicative in-hand₹55,000–₹62,000₹52,000–₹58,000₹48,000–₹54,000

Figures are approximate (basic ₹35,400 + current DA band + city-class HRA, minus NPS of 10% of basic + DA). They are not an official salary slip. Actual take-home depends on posting city, DA notification and departmental allowances.

Use the 7th CPC Salary Calculator for a city-wise estimate. This calculator provides an indicative figure. The official pay fixation in the appointment order prevails.

X-class HRA (30%) applies only in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad. Most CPWD / MES / CWC field postings are Y or Z class.

  7. Submit before 22 September 2026, 11:00 PM and save the application printout.
  8. If needed, use the correction window from 28 to 30 September 2026. If more than one application is submitted for the same examination, only the last submitted application will be considered. Fee paid on an earlier form may not be transferred.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Completing OTR only on the old ssc.nic.in site and assuming it will log you into this form
  • Choosing CPWD or DGLL for the extra two years of age, then listing a department that still caps age at 30
  • Applying for BRO as a woman candidate (those posts are male-only)
  • Counting Open and Distance Learning engineering degrees without checking the restricted-discipline clause
  • Paying the fee after 23 September 2026 or treating fee payment as optional after submitting the form
  • Skipping the correction window and discovering a wrong category or stream after admit cards are out

How Are Candidates Selected?

Selection is a multi-stage process. Marks in Paper-I only open the gate to Paper-II. Appointment follows Paper-II merit, document verification and, for BRO, physical and medical clearance.

  1. Paper-I Computer-Based Examination (qualifying)
  2. Paper-II Computer Based Examination (counts for final merit)
  3. Document verification by the allotted user department
  4. PET and medical examination for Border Roads Organisation posts
  5. Final appointment subject to vacancy, category roster and preference order

No interview stage is mentioned in the current notification. Selection is based on Paper-II merit plus document verification (and BRO physical/medical where applicable).

Separate merit lists are drawn for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), JE (Telecom) and Scientific Assistant (IMD).

Paper-I Pattern

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Intelligence & Reasoning5050
General Awareness5050

Previous Year Paper-I Cut-offs (JE Examination 2025)

These are official 2025 Paper-I cut-offs for shortlisting to Paper-II. They are a planning benchmark, not a prediction for 2026.

CategoryCivilElectrical / Mechanical

HH57.6440766.59578
Others-PwD40.0130044.18208

In 2025, SSC shortlisted 11,593 Civil candidates and 4,014 Electrical/Mechanical candidates against 1,731 final posts. Minimum qualifying marks in that cycle were 30% (UR), 25% (OBC/EWS) and 20% (other categories), plus the cut-off.

What’s Changed in 2026

  • Indicative vacancies: 1,748 versus 1,731 filled in the 2025 final result
  • New streams: JE (Telecom) in DoT and Scientific Assistant in IMD
  • New user departments also include DGLL and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying
  • Paper-I is explicitly qualifying; final merit is from Paper-II only
  • Preference and sliding/identity verification remain part of allocation after Paper-II, as seen in the 2025 cycle

Physical Standards (BRO posts)

BRO / GREF posts require a Physical Efficiency Test and medical fitness after the written result. Only male candidates are eligible.

TestStandard (as stated for this cycle)
Physical Efficiency Test1-mile run to be completed within 10 minutes
Physical measurementsRegion-wise minimum height, chest (unexpanded + expansion) and weight; Western Himalayan example often cited: height 158 cm, chest 75 cm + 5 cm, weight 47.5 kg
MedicalFit for high-altitude / difficult-terrain duty; tattoo rules apply (restricted sites)

Exact region-wise height and chest tables are in the official notice. Failure at PET or medical cancels BRO allocation. It does not automatically transfer you to another department unless the Commission’s allocation rules allow it. Use the Physical Standards Calculator only as a rough check, then verify from the notice.

Why Does Staff Selection Commission Matter?

Staff Selection Commission is the Government of India’s specialised recruiting body for Group ‘B’ and Group ‘C’ posts. Junior Engineer Examination feeds engineers into CPWD buildings, MES defence works, BRO border roads, CWC water projects, DGLL lighthouses, DoT telecom field units and IMD observing stations.

A selected JE becomes a central government employee of the user department, not of SSC. Posting, transfers, departmental exams and promotion to Assistant Engineer follow that department’s service rules.

Candidates search this exam because it is the widest all-India diploma-to-Group-B bridge in civil and electrical engineering. The honest downside is workload and location: BRO and many MES/CPWD field units mean remote sites, transfers and outdoor duty, not a fixed metro drawing office.

The SahisarkariJobs.in Analyst’s Take

Put this cycle next to GATE-based PSU JE/AE drives (NTPC, PGCIL, NHPC) and state PWD / irrigation JE exams. SSC JE asks for a diploma or degree without GATE, runs two CBTs, and allots CPWD, MES, BRO and smaller boards from one rank list. PSU drives pay more on IDA scales but take far fewer diploma holders. State JE exams keep you in one state but rarely match Level-6 plus central allowances and NPS mobility.

Best fit: diploma holders who want a regular Group ‘B’ central post without a GATE score, and B.E./B.Tech candidates who missed PSU shortlists but can handle a high-volume CBT. CPWD and CWC suit candidates who prefer buildings, roads or water projects over border roads.

Who should skip: anyone unwilling to leave their home state on first posting; women targeting only BRO (those seats are closed); and degree holders whose only paper is an unrecognised online engineering programme.

Also Read: CERC New Delhi Recruitment 2026 – Apply Offline for 17 Assistant, Senior Account Officer & Other Posts

Practical tip: Treat Paper-I as a filter, not the rank paper. Build Paper-II subject strength from day one. When the preference window opens, rank CPWD/CWC/MES above BRO only if you will actually accept field postings those departments offer. A high preference you later refuse at sliding wastes a seat and can stall your allocation.

What Documents Are Required?

Keep scanned and original copies ready for the form and for later verification:

  • Class 10 certificate (date of birth)
  • Diploma / B.E./B.Tech / B.Sc mark sheets and consolidated certificate
  • Experience certificate on organisation letterhead (for diploma-plus-experience routes), with dates covering the period up to 22 September 2026
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS) in the central-government format
  • PwBD certificate and scribe undertaking, if applicable
  • Ex-Servicemen discharge book and undertaking
  • Photo identity proof used in the application
  • Recent photograph matching live-capture rules on the portal

Document alert: OBC certificates must be in the central format with non-creamy-layer status valid for the year of verification. State-only OBC lists that are not recognised centrally get rejected at DV. Experience letters that omit designation, trade and exact dates usually fail the diploma-plus-experience route.

Service Conditions

Appointing authority is the user department, not SSC. Probation, bond, transfer liability and promotion rules follow that department.

Central government Group ‘B’ posts of this type are covered by the National Pension System unless a later rule notified by the department says otherwise. Confirm NPS versus any departmental scheme from the offer letter.

BRO service includes field tenure, high-altitude stations and combat-zone adjacent works. CPWD and MES mix office and site supervision. DoT JE (Telecom) and IMD Scientific Assistant follow those organisations’ station lists.

What Happens After Selection?

  1. Paper-II result is published on ssc.gov.in with stream-wise merit.
  2. Qualified candidates submit option-cum-preference for department and post through candidate login, as done after Paper-II in the previous cycle.
  3. SSC issues a First Round of Tentative Allocation, then a sliding / identity-verification step at the regional office. Absence at sliding was treated as withdrawal in 2025.
  4. The allotted department calls you for document verification and, for BRO, PET and medical.
  5. On clearance, the department issues the offer of appointment and joining instructions for a specific division or project.
  6. You join as Junior Engineer / Scientific Assistant on Level-6, serve probation as per that department, and later compete for Assistant Engineer through its departmental examination and seniority rules.

Based on recent JE cycles, expect 8–12 months from application close to joining. That is a planning estimate, not a promised calendar.

Contact & Helpline

Regional offices issue admit cards and handle sliding. Use the region printed on your application after submission.

FAQs – SSC JE 2026

What is the last date to apply for SSC JE 2026?

22 September 2026, 11:00 PM. The online fee can be paid till 23 September 2026, 11:00 PM. No extension is announced as of 02 September 2026. Submit early. The portal slows down on closing evening.

What is the age limit for SSC Junior Engineer posts?

18 to 30 years for most departments, 18 to 32 years for CPWD and DGLL, as on 01 August 2026. OBC gets 3 extra years, SC/ST 5, PwBD 10 on the UR ceiling. ESM get 3 years after deducting military service.

Is there an exam for SSC JE, or is it interview-based?

Yes, there is an exam. Paper-I is a qualifying CBT of 200 marks. Paper-II is a 300-mark technical CBT that builds the merit list. Document verification follows. BRO adds a 1-mile PET and medical. No interview is mentioned.

What is the salary of a Junior Engineer through this exam?

Around ₹55,000–₹62,000 in-hand in an X-class city at the start (Level-6 basic ₹35,400 plus DA and 30% HRA, minus NPS). Y and Z cities pay less HRA. Allowances follow the allotted department, not a single SSC payslip.

Can final-year students apply for this examination?

Only if the official notice expressly allows the qualification to be completed by a stated date. Safer reading: hold the diploma or degree by the closing date of 22 September 2026, especially where experience is also required. Produce originals at DV.

Is SSC JE a permanent government job?

Yes. These are regular Group ‘B’ Non-Gazetted posts in central user departments, with NPS as the default pension scheme. You work for CPWD, MES, BRO or the allotted organisation, not for the Commission.

Can candidates from other states apply?

Yes. This is an all-India examination. Indian citizens (and other nationalities listed in the notice) can apply. First posting can be anywhere the user department has a unit, including border and project sites.

Where will I be posted after selection?

Anywhere in India under the allotted department. CPWD and MES have a wide station grid. BRO postings are often in difficult or high-altitude sectors. You do not choose the first station; preference only ranks the department.

How many times can I attempt the Junior Engineer exam?

There is no separate attempt cap in this notice. You may apply in every cycle while you remain within the age limit after relaxations. Age, not attempt count, is the binding filter.

Is there negative marking in both papers?

Yes. Paper-I deducts 0.25 marks per wrong answer. Paper-II deducts 1 mark per wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. Guessing on Paper-II is costlier because each item is worth three marks.

What are the disadvantages of a central Junior Engineer posting?

Worth knowing before you apply: many seats sit in project towns and border sectors, not metro headquarters. Transfers are routine. BRO adds PET, medical and field hardship. Level-6 pay is solid for a diploma entry, but GATE-PSU AE scales are higher if you can clear those shorter lists.

What is the in-hand salary of a central government Junior Engineer?

Indicative take-home is about ₹55,000–₹62,000 in X-class cities and closer to ₹50,000 in smaller towns, on Level-6 basic of ₹35,400 plus current DA. HRA class and NPS change the exact figure. Use the 7th CPC calculator on this site for a city-wise sketch.

Do Central Public Works Department Junior Engineers get promoted?

Yes, in most user departments, JE is the feeder grade to Assistant Engineer through a departmental examination plus seniority. Timelines differ across CPWD, MES, CWC and BRO. Confirm the promotion rule from the department you actually join.

Final Checklist – Is This the Right Job for You?

  • You meet the age and educational criteria as on 01 August 2026.
  • Your diploma or degree stream matches at least one user department, including experience if you are on the diploma route.
  • You accept all-India posting, including possible field or border stations.
  • You are prepared for Paper-II as the rank paper, not only Paper-I.
  • If targeting BRO, you are male and ready for the 1-mile PET and medical.
  • You will finish OTR on ssc.gov.in (not the old ssc.nic.in site) before 22 September 2026.
