Who Should Apply?

Indian nationals who have completed 23 years and hold the essential qualification and post-qualification experience on or before 15 October 2026 can apply. Degrees and professional qualifications must be regular and full-time, from a university or institution recognised by UGC, AICTE, ICAI or ICMAI.

Experience must be from a PSU, a government organisation, a public limited company, a joint venture of PSUs, or a private firm with a valid CIN. The notice puts the onus of proving this on the candidate.

Mandatory vs preferred: A branch marked “preferred” or “strong plus” is not the same as the essential degree. What Is the Remuneration? – SAIL Young Professional 2026

The advertisement prints a monthly consolidated retainership fee, not a 7th CPC pay level and not an IDA basic.

The increment is a share of the retainership, tied to the year’s performance. The notice does not say which rating produces 4%, 7% or 10%.

Outstation Young Professionals may get company accommodation subject to availability: 2-bedroom, or equivalent rent of ₹6,000 a month at a city location. YP-3 may be considered for a 3-bedroom or ₹10,000 a month. Electricity, water and maintenance are charged at actuals. No HRA is payable. For the first three months, an outstation candidate may stay in a SAIL guest house or transit house at ₹200 a day, subject to availability. Food is at applicable rates.

Company hospital OPD and IPD are free for self, spouse and two dependent children at a plant or unit hospital. No medical referral facility is extended. Adequate medical, life, health and accident cover is mandatory. Premium reimbursement needs documentary proof and is pro-rata for a part year.

Official tour: YP-1, rail 2AC/CC, stay up to ₹2,000 a day. YP-2: economy air or rail 2AC/CC, stay up to ₹2,500. YP-3: economy air or rail 1AC/EC; stay up to ₹3,000. Local travel and food: ₹1,000 a day for YP-1 and YP-2, ₹1,200 for YP-3. Air for YP-2 is allowed only above 500 km. In Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, those stay limits rise by 15%. Road travel needs prior approval and is reimbursed at ₹10.50 per km.

Not payable, as printed: PF, pension, gratuity, performance-related pay, loans, terminal or service benefits, and any reimbursement not named in the advertisement. Income tax and GST are dealt with under the applicable Acts. This is not an in-hand estimate.

What Is the Application Fee?

Pay online after the form is complete. The candidate bears payment-gateway charges in addition. Fees once paid cannot be refunded under any circumstances. The notice does not print a category exemption.

Suggested, not a notification rule: submit at least two days before 15 October 2026 so a failed payment can be retried. The notice itself says candidates should apply well before the closing date.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Submitting more than one engagement. The notice asks candidates to apply for only one. A second form is not described as a preference list.
• Confirming the form, then spotting a wrong engagement code. No editing is allowed after confirmation, and a wrong payment is not corrected.
• Uploading experience from a firm that cannot show a valid CIN, or from an employer outside the printed list.
• Treating “Mechanical/Civil preferred” as a hard rejection of every other B.E./B.Tech, or skipping the SAP-project count on C-1 and C-3.

How Are Candidates Selected?

Selection is not a single interview for every applicant.

1. Applications received by 15 October 2026 are scrutinised against the eligibility printed for that engagement code.
2. If applications for an engagement are more than five times the seats, SAIL may hold a computer-based, aptitude, general management or psychometric test, or ask candidates to appear in a standard test. The shortlist for interview is 1:3 on that test. If several candidates share the cut-off, all of them are called.
3. If applications are fewer than five times the requirement, all eligible candidates may be called for personal interview.
4. The centre allotted for the test or interview is binding. No change of centre, interview date or medical-examination date is entertained.
5. Selected candidates must join as stated in the offer of engagement, after the contract is signed.

The notice does not print syllabus, marks, duration or negative marking for the conditional test. No interview-only merit formula is printed either. Interview travel: one to-and-fro AC 2-tier fare, including reservation and Tatkal if any, if the distance is more than 30 km each way, on proof of journey. The printed retainership is the pay. PF, pension, gratuity and PRP are excluded by name.

Best fit: A B.E./B.Tech sales engineer with hollow-section, coated-product or fabrication experience, a CA/CMA with GST or receivables work, or an SAP consultant who can count implementation projects. E-1 suits someone already doing CO₂ or GHG accounting. D-1 suits an MBA (PM & IR) who has handled statutory industrial-relations filings.

Leave this one if you need a pensionable cadre, a five-day week, or experience that sits only in a proprietorship without a CIN. The standard day is eight and a half hours, six days a week, and extra hours carry no extra fee.

At joining, a general medical fitness certificate from a qualified medical practitioner is required. The company may still ask for a medical examination under its standards. Two recent passport-size photographs are sensible to keep, though the portal upload is the application copy.

What Happens After Selection?

1. SAIL issues an offer of engagement. The candidate must join as indicated in that offer.

5. Performance is reviewed annually. Extension beyond the initial period, up to two further years, one year at a time, is at the company’s discretion and requires satisfactory performance. Silence at the end of a term means the contract stands completed. Maximum engagement is five years.

In the first six months, either side may end the contract on seven days’ notice, with no notice pay. After that, one month’s notice or one month’s retainership and applicable allowances apply. Fifteen days of unsanctioned absence can end the contract at once.
