Vacancies: 1 · Posts: 1 · Type: Direct Recruitment / Deputation / Re-employment · Mode: Offline (Post + email copy) · Fee: Not prescribed · Apply: By 30 Sep 2026 (15 Oct 2026 for notified remote regions) · Salary: ₹2,25,000/month (fixed, 7th CPC) · Selection: Search-cum-Selection Committee · Location: Jakkur, Bengaluru

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), an autonomous deemed-to-be university under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is searching for its next President at Jakkur, Bengaluru. Advt No. JNC/AO/R.1384/03/2026 dated 29 August 2026 invites applications and nominations for this single scientific leadership post.

The opening follows a change at the top. Prof. Umesh V. Waghmare, who took charge as President in June 2025, has been selected as Secretary, DST. Prof. K.S. Narayan is currently in charge as President. This cycle is for the head of the Centre, not a faculty or project post.

Pay is ₹2,25,000 a month (fixed) under the 7th CPC. Age must not exceed 60 years as on 01 July 2026. Last date of receipt at Jakkur is 30 September 2026 for most of India, and 15 October 2026 for the notified North-East, Himalayan and island regions.

What Posts Are Available?

One designation only. The table is still required so pay, qualification and vacancy sit in one scan.

Interpretation: This is not a mass faculty drive. JNCASR is filling the President’s chair, the campus equivalent of a Vice-Chancellor. Competition will come from Directors of national labs, IISER / IIT / IISc-style academic leaders and sitting Professors with a decade of institutional charge. If you are a mid-career scientist without the 10-year Professor-level block, this advertisement is not written for you.

Post NameVacanciesQualificationPay
President1PhD in physical / chemical/life sciences or related interdisciplinary area + 25 years of R&D (PhD period included), of which 6 years managerial/administrative for S&T, including 10 years as Professor or equivalent₹2,25,000/month (fixed, 7th CPC)

Your academic record is the shortlist, not a written paper.

There is no CBT or OMR exam in this recruitment. The Search-cum-Selection Committee shortlists from applications, nominations and, if needed, names the committee itself invites. Interview-style interaction, if held, comes only after that shortlist. A thin CV with a famous degree will not reach the table if the 25-year and 6-year managerial blocks are missing. Count years from the Master’s stage, including PhD, before you post the file.

✅ Confirmed in the PDF: 1 President post; ₹2,25,000 fixed; age 60 as on 01 July 2026; three appointment methods; Formats I and II; dual last dates; chaircom@jncasr.ac.in copy.

❓ Not specified in the PDF: category-wise roster for this single selection post; application fee; DA/HRA breakup on the fixed pay; marks scheme for any interaction; a public exam date.

Eligibility – Education, Age & Experience

Essential education: Doctorate in physical sciences, chemical sciences, life sciences, or any other related interdisciplinary area.

Desirable: Post-doctoral research; original published work of high standard; evidence of professional eminence through academy fellowships and national or international science awards.

Direct Recruitment experience (essential):

  1. At least 25 years of R&D in industrial and academic institutions and/or S&T organisations, or as faculty/scientist of recognised national or international universities, research institutes or corporate R&D labs.
  2. Of this, 6 years must be in a managerial or administrative capacity for Science & Technology programmes, planning and development, budget and finance, coordination and similar organisational matters.
  3. This block shall also include a minimum of 10 years as a Professor in a university system, or 10 years in an equivalent position in a reputed research and/or academic administrative organisation.
  4. R&D experience in the Centre’s domain areas (physical / chemical/life / related interdisciplinary sciences).
  5. R&D experience includes the PhD period.

Deputation/contract experience: Scientists or technologists in Central or State Governments, universities, recognised research institutions, or semi-government, statutory or autonomous organisations in India, who:

  • hold an analogous post, or
  • have 1 year regular service in the ₹75,500–80,000 grade (HAG+) or equivalent, or
  • have 3 years regular service in ₹67,000–79,000 (HAG) or equivalent, or
  • have 7 years regular service in the pay band ₹37,400–67,000 + Grade Pay ₹10,000 or equivalent,

and who also hold the essential educational qualification and experience above.

What Is the Age Limit for This Recruitment?

CategoryMaximum age as on 01 July 2026
All applicants (as printed)60 years

The advertisement prints one ceiling: not exceeding 60 years as on 01 July 2026. It does not print separate SC/ST/OBC/PwBD maxima. Do not assume +3 or +5 unless a later official note says so.

Examples:

✅ A 59-year-old candidate born on 02 July 1966 — eligible (within the 60-year limit as on 01 July 2026).
❌ A 61-year-old candidate born on 01 July 1965 — not eligible (exceeds the maximum age by 1 year).

Use our Age Eligibility Calculator to check instantly.

Outer service limit after joining is separate: five-year term, or 65 years (present superannuation age), or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

What Is the President’s Salary in Bengaluru?

The advertisement fixes pay at ₹2,25,000 per month (fixed) under the 7th CPC. That figure is the Apex-scale cell used for several central scientific heads and Vice-Chancellor-grade posts.

ComponentAmountBasis
Notified pay₹2,25,000 / monthOfficial wording: “Rs.2,25,000/-(fixed) (7th CPC)”
DA / HRA / TANot broken up in this advertisementBengaluru is an X-class city (30% HRA) under current central HRA rules, but only if JNCASR / DST extends those allowances on this fixed cell
Indicative cash in handStart with ₹2,25,000; gross can be higher if DA and HRA are separately admissibleConfirm from the appointment order, not from this page

Claim + proof: ₹2,25,000 a month is the only pay number printed in Advt No. JNC/AO/R.1384/03/2026. It is already well above a typical Level-14 Professor basic. Treat extra allowances as unconfirmed until the offer letter lists them.

Run an indicative central-pay simulation on the 7th CPC Salary Calculator. Use the conversion method in the notification and institute rules. The calculator is only an estimate. The official formula prevails.

NPS, official residence, car and medical cover are normal questions for this grade. None of those perks are quantified in the current PDF. Do not budget them as guaranteed.

What Is the Application Fee?

No application fee is printed in the detailed advertisement or the short advertisement. There is no SBI Collect link and no category-wise challan.

Do not pay anyone who calls offering a “processing fee” for the President file. Submit Formats I and II by post as instructed.

How to Apply?

There is no online form. JNCASR wants a physical dossier at Jakkur and a digital copy with the Chairperson of the Council of Management.

Step 1. Download the detailed advertisement, which contains Format I (full application) and Format II (short CV, maximum 2 A4 pages, Times New Roman 12 pt, single spacing). Use the JNCASR President Recruitment 2026 detailed advertisement PDF.

Step 2. Fill Format I in full. Paste a latest passport-size photograph. State the preferred mode of appointment clearly: Direct Recruitment, Deputation, or either.

Step 3. Attach self-attested photocopies of age, doctorate, Master’s degree, experience, pay, awards, publication and project lists. Format I also asks for citations and h-index as on 01 July 2026.

Step 4. Post the set to:

Administrative Officer
Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research
Jakkur, Bengaluru 560064

Superscribe the envelope exactly:
Application for the post of President, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).

Step 5. Email one copy to the Chairperson, Council of Management, at chaircom@jncasr.ac.in. Use a plain subject such as Application for the post of President, JNCASR – [Your Full Name]. Keep the PDF under a readable size and send during working hours.

Step 6. Serving staff in government, autonomous bodies and PSUs must also move the file through proper channel with NOC / cadre clearance and vigilance/integrity certificate. Send an advance copy to Jakkur so the receipt date is safe. Direct Recruitment selectees must later give consent for technical resignation from the parent substantive post.

If you are nominating someone: Forward the nominee’s application or CV, your recommendation, the nominee’s written consent, and duly attested photocopies of Doctorate and Master’s certificates to the same Administrative Officer address by the same last date, plus the email copy to chaircom@jncasr.ac.in.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Treating 15 October 2026 as the date for Bengaluru or Delhi applicants. That later date is only for the listed North-East, Himalayan and island areas. Everyone else must reach Jakkur by 30 September 2026.
  2. Posting the file and skipping the email copy. The PDF requires both the physical set and the copy to chaircom@jncasr.ac.in.
  3. Wrong envelope title. Packets without the exact superscription can sit in the general inward dak.
  4. Channel delay. An advance copy saves the date. It does not replace NOC, cadre clearance and vigilance clearance when the parent office finally forwards the file.
  5. Silent on Direct vs Deputation. The Centre asks you to name the preferred mode. Leaving it blank creates avoidable clarification later.

How Are Candidates Selected?

No written examination is mentioned in the current notification. Selection is based on a search, not a public CBT.

  1. Receipt of applications and nominations at the Administrative Officer’s office, plus an email copy to the Chairperson, Council of Management.
  2. Search-cum-Selection Committee review. The committee also considers names sent by Fellows of Academies, Directors of National Laboratories and Vice-Chancellors.
  3. Committee outreach. After reviewing all files, the committee may consider persons who did not apply, and may invite a person of high repute.
  4. Shortlisting against transparent criteria that the Ministry / Search-cum-Selection Committee will frame.
  5. Recommendation to the Governing Body.
  6. Appointment by the Governing Body with the approval or concurrence of the Central Government (DST) and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), wherever applicable.

Merit is not settled by pay negotiation. Any later discussion on joining date or residual allowances sits after the search recommendation, not inside it.

Ties and cut-off marks are not printed. The PDF only says the committee will formulate transparent criteria.

Why Does JNCASR Bengaluru Matter?

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research sits on the Jakkur campus in Bengaluru. DST set it up in 1989, in Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth-centenary year, with Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS, as Founder President. UGC recognised it as a deemed-to-be university in 2002.

The Centre runs Ph.D., Integrated Ph.D., M.S. (Engg. / Research) and related research programmes in frontier physical, chemical and life sciences. The President is the academic and administrative head, the campus counterpart of a Vice-Chancellor, working under a Council of Management.

Candidates search this employer because a JNCASR chair carries DST visibility, a Bengaluru research ecosystem next to IISc and other labs, and the chance to shape interdisciplinary programmes rather than a single department. The honest limit is scale. This is a focused deemed university, not a multi-campus IIT system, and the President still answers to DST, the Council of Management and, for this appointment, ACC where applicable.

JNCASR careers sit in India’s scientific research space, with the campus rooted in Karnataka. Readers comparing DST autonomous institutes can start from the JNCASR organisation page.

The SahisarkariJobs.in Analyst’s Take

The closest tabs a serious applicant already has open are Director searches at IISc, IISERs, CSIR national laboratories and other DST autonomous institutes, plus Vice-Chancellor searches at science-heavy deemed universities. Those processes also run through search-cum-selection and ACC or Visitor-level approval. This JNCASR file is narrower: one campus, one scientific mandate, fixed Apex-style pay already printed.

Best fit: A sitting Professor or lab Director around 52–59 years, with a recognisable publication record, a decade of running departments or institutes, and comfort with budget, faculty affairs and DST file work. The job description is leadership of programmes and people, not a larger personal bench.

Who should walk past this file: Early-career faculty, industry R&D managers without the 10-year Professor-equivalent block, and applicants who want a quiet Distinguished Professor term with no council meetings. The Search-cum-Selection Committee can ignore a weak field and invite its own name. A courtesy application does not create a right to be heard.

Practical tip: Write Format II as a two-page leadership note, not a fourth reprint of your faculty homepage. Open with the 25-year and 6-year administrative counts in numbers, name the preferred appointment mode on page 1 of Format I, and put the Jakkur packet in the post at least a week before 30 September 2026 so the receipt stamp is not a last-day argument.

From similar DST and deemed-university head searches, expect several months between the closing date and a public appointment, because DST and ACC notes move on their own clock.

What Documents Are Required?

Keep originals ready. Send self-attested copies with the application.

  • Format I (full application) with photograph
  • Format II (short CV, ≤ 2 A4 pages)
  • Proof of date of birth
  • Doctorate and Master’s degree certificates (nominations need duly attested copies of both)
  • Full chronological experience certificates, with pay level and nature of charge
  • Proof of 10 years as Professor or equivalent, if claiming the direct-recruitment route
  • For deputation: analogous-post / HAG / HAG+ / Grade Pay ₹10,000 service proof
  • List of awards, academy fellowships, patents, books, papers, citations and h-index as on 01 July 2026
  • Summary of research led and of managerial work in S&T programmes, planning, budget and coordination
  • Serving staff: NOC / cadre clearance, vigilance and integrity certificates (advance copy first if the channel is slow)
  • Direct Recruitment preference: readiness to give consent for technical resignation
  • Valid photo ID and communication address

Document alert: Citations and h-index are dated to 01 July 2026 in Format I. Do not paste an older Google Scholar screenshot from 2024. Serving applicants who send only the advance copy and never push the parent office for vigilance clearance stall the file after shortlisting.

Service Conditions

  • Appointment methods: Direct Recruitment; Deputation including short-term contract; Re-employment.
  • Tenure follows UGC (Deemed to be Universities) Regulations 2010, as amended.
  • Outer limit: five years, or 65 years of age, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, as per Central Government rules.
  • Extension of tenure, deputation or contract is possible on the recommendation of the Council of Management, with Central Government approval, as per DoP&T instructions and the same UGC regulations.
  • Probation: one year.
  • Direct Recruits must give consent for technical resignation from the parent substantive post.
  • The President holds overall administrative control of the Institute and leads identification of national and international research programmes in the Centre’s domains.

Hostel, canteen or campus housing is not promised in this advertisement. Any residence or official vehicle would appear only in the appointment order or Centre rules.

What Happens After Selection?

  1. The Search-cum-Selection Committee closes the file review and, if needed, calls shortlisted or invited names for interaction.
  2. The committee recommends a name (or a panel) using the criteria it has framed.
  3. The Governing Body considers the recommendation.
  4. DST concurrence and ACC approval are taken wherever those gates apply. This stage can take longer than the application window.
  5. The offer states the method of appointment (Direct / Deputation / Re-employment), the five-year or 65-year outer limit, and the one-year probation.
  6. Direct Recruits complete technical resignation formalities with the parent organisation. Deputationists remain on the parent cadre’s books as per the deputation order.
  7. Joining is at Jakkur, Bengaluru. The early months involve Council, faculty, finance and DST interface work, not a fresh teaching load.
  8. Confirmation follows satisfactory probation. Further tenure needs a separate extension decision. There is no printed automatic absorption into a different permanent grade after five years.

Career path after a full term is usually a return to a parent Professor or Director line, a later national academy or ministry assignment, or superannuation at 65. It is not a promotional ladder inside JNCASR the way Junior Assistant to Section Officer is.

FAQs – JNCASR President 2026

What is the last date to apply for JNCASR President 2026?

30 September 2026 for other regions, if the packet must reach Jakkur. 15 October 2026 only for the listed North-East, Himalayan and island areas. No extension is printed as on 05 September 2026. Post early. Receipt at Bengaluru matters more than the date on your local stamp.

What is the age limit for JNCASR President?

60 years as on 01 July 2026. The advertisement does not print extra years for OBC, SC, ST or PwBD. Superannuation after joining is 65 years, or the five-year term, whichever comes first. Check the date of birth against 01 July 2026 before you print Format I.

Is there an exam for JNCASR President, or is it interview-based?

No written exam is mentioned. Selection runs through a Search-cum-Selection Committee, which may also invite a person who never applied. Any interaction is committee-led, not a public CBT. Final appointment still needs Governing Body action and DST / ACC approval where applicable.

What is the salary of the JNCASR President?

₹2,25,000 per month, fixed, under the 7th CPC. That is the only figure in the advertisement. DA, HRA and other allowances are not itemised here. Bengaluru is an X-class city in the central HRA list, but extra allowances need the appointment order.

Can final-year students or result-awaited candidates apply for JNCASR 2026?

No. This search requires a doctorate plus about 25 years of R&D and 10 years at Professor or equivalent level. A student or a freshly submitted thesis does not meet the printed essential experience. Wait for faculty or mid-career JNCASR notices instead.

Is JNCASR President a permanent government job?

It is a Central Government-linked scientific head post at a DST autonomous deemed-to-be university, not a typical SSC-style permanent Grade C seat. Tenure is five years or till 65, with one-year probation. Direct, deputation and re-employment are all on the table. Extension is a separate government decision.

Can candidates from other states apply for this recruitment?

Yes. No Karnataka domicile clause is printed. The campus is in Bengaluru, and the scientific bar is national. Serving staff anywhere in India use the proper-channel route. Only the last date changes for the listed remote regions, not the eligibility itself.

Where will I be posted if selected as President?

At JNCASR, Jakkur, Bengaluru 560064. This advertisement is for the Centre’s head, not a transferable circle post. National and international travel for academic partnerships is part of the job description. Day-to-day charge remains the Jakkur campus.

How are directors of DST autonomous institutes selected?

Usually through a Search-cum-Selection Committee, not a public written exam. Applications, nominations and invited names go to the same table. Ministries then take the Governing Body and, where required, ACC approval. JNCASR’s 2026 President advertisement follows that national-lab / institute-head pattern.

What is the salary of a research institute director in India?

Apex or HAG-plus cells are common for national institute heads. This JNCASR advertisement already prints ₹2,25,000 fixed under the 7th CPC. IISc, IISER and CSIR Director packages can differ in allowances and campus housing. Always read the specific PDF rather than copying another lab’s in-hand figure.

What are the disadvantages of taking an institute President post?

Worth knowing before you apply: you trade bench time for council, DST and faculty-governance work. The term can end at five years even if you wanted a longer scientific innings. ACC and ministry timelines are outside your control. If you want only a Distinguished Professorship, this chair will feel like a different profession.

Is the head of a deemed university a government job?

Yes, in the public-science sense, when the institute is a DST autonomous body like JNCASR. Pay, tenure and ACC scrutiny follow Central Government and UGC deemed-university rules. It is still not the same service as an IAS or Secretariat post. Parent-cadre deputation rules continue to apply if you join that way.

Do I need GATE or NET for this JNCASR vacancy?

No. GATE, NET-JRF and similar scores are entry tickets for students and some young faculty. They are not the shortlist for President. The committee will read your 25-year R&D record, 6-year administrative block and 10-year Professor-equivalent charge, plus publications and honours.

Final Checklist – Is This the Right Job for You?

  • You will be 60 or below as of 01 July 2026.
  • You hold a doctorate in physical, chemical, life or related interdisciplinary sciences.
  • Your R&D years (including PhD) reach 25, with 6 years of S&T administration and 10 years as Professor or equivalent, unless you are using a valid deputation or nomination path.
  • You can live with a five-year or 65-year outer limit and a one-year probation, not an open-ended Grade A cadre post.
  • Format I, Format II, attested degrees and the Jakkur packet can reach the Administrative Officer by 30 September 2026 (or 15 October 2026 if you are in a notified remote region), with a copy to chaircom@jncasr.ac.in.
  • Serving staff can move NOC, cadre clearance and vigilance papers through the proper channel, after an advance copy.
  • You accept that the hardest stage is the Search-cum-Selection Committee and DST / ACC approval, not a written paper.
